Tips to Save Petrol

With petrol prices creeping above $2.20 a litre we have compiled a list of easy and practical tips to help you cut your fuel spending by up to half as recommended by the New Zealand Transport Agency:

Brake sooner and accelerate slower (up to 25% saving)

Pump up the tyres and get your car tuned (up to 10% saving) - Did you know tyres lose about 1 psi pressure per month due to air loss caused by the tyre hitting holes, bumps and kerbs? As a result, you should check your tyres at least once a month. Just 1 tyre deflated by 2 psi will result in a 1% increase in fuel consumption.

Remove the roof rack (up to 10% saving) - On the average, every 50kg added load in your car will increase fuel consumption by 2%.

Drive at moderate speeds - This isnít surprising, but the statistics genuinely are! Most of the fuel usage goes on reducing aerodynamic drag which increases at higher speeds. For every 10km/h you increase over 100km/hr your fuel consumption nearly doubles! That said, driving at slow speeds can also be very fuel inefficient at times; the fuel consumption of an average car increases sharply at speeds below 50km/h.

Avoid short trips - you use 20% more fuel driving on a cold engine.

Clean the air-filter regularly - A surprising one, but a blocked/clogged air filter can increase fuel consumption by up to 10% by restricting airflow to the engine. Furthering this theme, use air-con sparingly also! Air conditioners can use about 10% extra fuel when operating. However, over speeds of 80km/h, air-con is better for fuel economy than an open window

Drive in a high gear when possible - The engine runs most efficiently between around 1,500 and 2,500 rpm. To maintain these low revs you should change up through the gears as soon as practical and before the revs reach 2500 rpm
