Key Launches New Zealand China Strategy

Prime Minister John Key today outlined a new strategy for New Zealand’s ties with China in Auckland. The country’s dealings with china have been given clear direction in the form of a 5 year plan that has been called the New Zealand China Strategy, the first of its kind. Key wants more investment between the countries and said that New Zealand was well on its way to doubling its two-way trade with China to 20 billion U.S. dollars by 2015 a plan that the Prime Minister said was realised when he visited Chinese Premier Wen Jiaboa in 2010. He said, “We have a strong relationship with China and have seen good growth in trade over the past few years. The launch of the strategy today will help further strengthen that relationship.” New Zealand is the only Western economy that has a free trade agreement with China.

Key also said, “Trade with China is one of the success stories of the New Zealand’s export sector over the past decade or so.”  He also said that there are good reasons for a strategy. China is the world’s second largest economy and is still growing fast. It is also a major influence in the Asia Pacific region. The main focus of the strategy is trade and economic but it will also bring both government agencies together to build political and diplomatic ties. The strategy is essential a set of five foals twill increase trade and develop more science and technology collaborations. This launch has been warmly welcomed by New Zealand’s business and finance sectors particularly as many see in the near future China becoming an important source of funding for New Zealand’s business and infrastructure.
