New Zealand Government Outline Areas To Improve Economy

The New Zealand Government have outlined six areas that it says are pivotal to build a more productive and competitive economy over the next three years. The government believe that stable and sustainable economic growth that can create permanent employment is best reached by building an economy that allowed business to trade successfully with the rest of the world. This is according to both the Finance Minister Bill English and Economic Development Minister Steven Joyce. In a joint statement they said, “The government has put together a business growth plan that would ensure ministers and departments were focused on the six important inputs businesses need to access to be internally competitive.”

The six key areas for business growth are – capital markets; innovation and ideas; natural resources; skilled and safe workplaces; export markets; and infrastructure (including electricity, transport and broadband). Edwards and Joyce plan to co-ordinate informal groups of ministers in each of the key areas to reinforce the growth plan and new policies would be added to each of the areas over the coming years. They say that significant steps will be taken to make New Zealand’s economy more competitive and that they have a clear focus on these areas to help drive this forward.

In the same statement Joyce said lifting overall productivity and competitiveness of the economy was critical to business growth to creating more jobs and higher wages. Joyce said, “The reality that if we want more and better jobs for New Zealanders we need to encourage more businesses to be based here...Nothing creates sustainable jobs and boosts our standard of living better than business confidence and growth.”
