LIFE INSURANCE

What is Life Insurance?

Life insurance is important for those who want to make sure that their family and loved ones are financially taken care if you die.

No-one likes to think about the unthinkable, but what would happen if you or your partner were to die? Aside from the personal loss, financially life can become very difficult with mortgage costs, funeral expenses and daily household costs to deal with.

With a life insurance policy, those who are left behind receive a cash payout so that life can be a little easier to deal with after the insured dies.

When Should I Seek Life Insurance?

If you are freshly graduated from college, the last thing on your mind might be the logistics of looking after loved ones such as a partner or children. But the earlier you consider something like life insurance and your pension, the more you can save yourself and your nearest and dearest a lot of hassle.

Life insurance is especially important once you do have dependents so start thinking about what policy you might need now, to ensure that you have everything in place.

There are plenty of worrying statistics about heart disease, cancer and accidental deaths in New Zealand each year; while the stats may make an unpleasant read, they do highlight the importance of being careful with your and your family's financial affairs.

What Level of Cover Do I Need?

The type and level of life cover you take is a very individual choice. You can base your life insurance around any personal matters you and your family may find important, such as cancer; it may not feature in your lives now but if someone in your family has suffered before, you may wish to ensure that if you were to receive a cancer diagnosis, you could receive a cash payout.

Other typical types of life insurance include:

  • General life cover
  • Mortgage cover
  • Funeral cover
  • Permanent disability cover
  • Trauma cover
  • Income protection cover

Each type deals with general or specific aspects that will give you / your family financial support in difficult times.

Take your time and seek independent guidance if necessary to ensure you get the right level of cover.
